Why Your First 90 Days Matter

While it may be easy to gloss over, the first 90 days of your new role are arguably the most important part of your new job.

First impressions matter. Whether we like it or not, how you start your new job can make or break your career. In fact, science suggests that first impressions are incredibly persistent. According to a 2010 University of Western Ontario study, even if you later present yourself in ways that challenge a person’s first impression of you, their initial judgment tends to linger—especially within the same context in which they first met you.

So, what does this mean for your new role? When you start your new job, it’s absolutely critical to start off on a strong foot.

In fact, the majority of executives give new hires less than three months to prove themselves. A 2016 Robert Half study found that 63% of CFOs allow a new employee less than three months to show their value—and 9% give them less than a month.

So, now that we know we want to make sure the first 90 days count, what do we need to do to get started?
